Artist Biography:
Emiko Woods was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA and received her BFA from Azusa Pacific University, with a Minor in Art History. After graduation, she moved with her husband to Saint Gallen, Switzerland, where she currently resides. In addition to her work in Fine Art and Illustration, she is also freelance graphic designer.
As a trained sculptress with a newfound love of painting, her most recent work incorporates the two. She has always been drawn to elements found in nature that convey aspects of internal journey, place, and connectedness. Each piece begins with a question and through the process of making, enlightenment unfolds.
She loves researching new things, journaling, poetry, and traveling as much as possible.
Artist Statement:
COME CLOSE
Remember a time when your stillness spoke to you. When you felt so whole, your chest heaved with the weight. A time when simplicity, was the greatest pleasure of all.
LISTEN
We all have an inner voice. The one that tells us to pursue truth & beauty, and to never let go of what we knew as a child. The one that dares us to find our strength in vulnerability. The one that beg us to journey deeper and reminds us that we are never lost.
DISCOVER
This pursuit is my greatest hope. To uncover the mysteries that reside within this space that is internal at its source and manifests itself through nature, symbols, and rituals. Journey with me as I make these connections, uncover quiet truths, and explore the one-ness that connects us all.
“Emiko Woods uses her work as a way to understand the connectedness of nature with hopes that we might gain greater knowledge of the truths within. Her illustrative style combined with her topographical, paper-cut backgrounds, seek to draw the viewer in close as she uses animals as a conduct through which we might understand the patterns and rhythms of nature. Her work for the exhibition explores timeless love and the idea that ‘the truest love is the simplest and the one we have carried with us all along.’” – from Press Release of current show Wild Heart by Emiko Woods for Flower Pepper Gallery
