Interview with Flower Pepper Gallery:
- How would you describe your own artwork?
My work explores the junctions between past and present, memory and imagination, fantasy and reality, while creating a dialog between image and viewer.
- Is there a story behind this painting/drawing/sculpture/installation?
These paintings are part of a series that extends out of my usual body of work. I have always felt a connection to old American road signs, and used images of them as accent pieces in my compositions. In the summer of 2015 I took a road trip to visit my in-laws who live in Louisiana. Along the way I stopped and took pictures of the road signs scattered on and off of Route 66. The images were so engaging that I realized they needed to be the main focus in a series of works…a snapshot of the past brought to life with contemporary processes.
- Can you talk about your creative process?
I use many different approaches, techniques, and mediums, to create a sense of memory, personal history, and nostalgia. Using contemporary techniques coupled with historic imagery I explore the area between past and present.
