Artist Statement:
“I didn’t have any idea what I was going to do for the show, and I try not to force ideas into being. But I’ve been taking pictures of things that catch my eye on walks around my neighborhood, anything that tells a story. I came across this house that had been demolished and took a photo of the debris. I was painting that debris in watercolor when the Lesley Gore song “Brink of Disaster” suddenly played on shuffle. Hearing the chorus repeated, I just made an instant connection between the debris and the plight of the pandas. I kept thinking how all this rubble was headed for a landfill somewhere, and how quickly we are all facing extinction. I played with a few approaches. I did a block print first, but that didn’t have the effect I was looking for. I wanted the panda to sort of float above the wreckage. So, I did several drawings on acetate until I got the right one. To follow the theme through, I used acetate that is 100% biodegradable and put it in a frame and mat made from 100% recycled material.” – KD
