Artist Statement about Eureka:
When most people hear Los Angeles, they do not immediately think of camping or nature. Yet, when I lived there, my favorite activities were going on hikes, driving through the canyon, and even camping. This map was inspired by the San Gabriel River where it forks east and west. It has foliage connected with California such as the California Poppy, orange blossoms, and Ponderosa Pines.
People often say that camping and being in nature brings out the best in them. For me that’s also true. It’s a chance to reflect, take lots of deep breaths, and connect our roots back to nature and its beauty. The title, “Eureka” is a Greek word meaning ‘I have found it’ and it’s California’s state motto. I think it also applies to moments spent in nature where we discover so much about ourselves and who we are meant to be.
Artist Biography:
Emiko Woods was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA and received her BFA from Azusa Pacific University, with a Minor in Art History. After graduation, she moved with her husband to Saint Gallen, Switzerland, where she currently resides. In addition to her work in Fine Art and Illustration, she is also freelance graphic designer.
As a trained sculptress with a newfound love of painting, her most recent work incorporates the two. She has always been drawn to elements found in nature that convey aspects of internal journey, place, and connectedness. Each piece begins with a question and through the process of making, enlightenment unfolds.
She loves researching new things, journaling, poetry, and traveling as much as possible.
Artist Statement:
COME CLOSE
Remember a time when your stillness spoke to you. When you felt so whole, your chest heaved with the weight. A time when simplicity, was the greatest pleasure of all.
LISTEN
We all have an inner voice. The one that tells us to pursue truth & beauty, and to never let go of what we knew as a child. The one that dares us to find our strength in vulnerability. The one that beg us to journey deeper and reminds us that we are never lost.
DISCOVER
This pursuit is my greatest hope. To uncover the mysteries that reside within this space that is internal at its source and manifests itself through nature, symbols, and rituals. Journey with me as I make these connections, uncover quiet truths, and explore the one-ness that connects us all.
